Setting boundaries is an essential aspect of maintaining healthy relationships and personal well-being.
However, it is not uncommon for people to unintentionally cross those boundaries, often because of a lack of awareness. In these situations, it’s important to address the issue assertively and respectfully. I want to share a personal experience that shows why it’s important to address boundary-crossing behavior. I was at a store and a salesperson asked me for a donation to a charity. Although I support charitable causes, I felt uncomfortable with the way they approached me.
The woman was rude when she said, “We need donations for this charity, so you must contribute something.” At first, I thought she was joking and asked, “Sorry, what did you say?” She repeated, “You must give something.” I stared at her and replied, “I won’t be donating to this cause.” “Why not?” she asked." Because I don’t want to, and it’s my money."
Being assertive and maintaining eye contact played a crucial role in conveying my decision and stance effectively. It showed that I was confident in my boundaries and that I expected them to be respected. By doing so, I provided an opportunity for the salesperson to reflect on their approach and potentially learn from the experience.
Setting and maintaining boundaries is crucial for our well-being and the health of our relationships. When someone crosses those boundaries, it is important to address the issue assertively and respectfully. By doing so, we not only assert our own needs but also contribute to a more respectful and understanding social environment. So, let’s remember to be assertive, respectful, and clear when someone crosses one of your boundaries because You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!
